The Pining by Devon McCormack

The Pining by Devon McCormack – 3.5 Stars

I have read a few of Devon’s books and have enjoyed them all. They are varied in topic and tone. For instance Tight End was sexy and sassy and very current, while the Bastards series was dark and taboo and quite ruthless on the reader. The Pining is completely different to those books. It was entertaining and funny throughout, with undertones of sinister and hints of sexy, but it didn’t leave as much of an impression as his other books. I have read many YA books so wouldn’t give that as a reason, I just felt this was a bit over stuffed with content.

I liked that the characters were far from perfect in both looks and personality and their quirks were endearing. Kevin, our hero, is a high school student recently turned vampire and The Pining is his story. He yearns for his previous life; his parents; a boyfriend and a future untainted by blood and murder. What he gets is a fight for survival. His Master wants him forever by his side, but there are evil forces all around and Kevin must try to defeat them all in order to have some semblance of a normal life.

Devon McCormack has an extremely vivid imagination and comes across as witty in his writing. I would still recommend The Pining as a quick, enjoyable read. I’m a big fan of this author and very much looking forward to reading more of his work.
