Helix by Anna Martin
4 stars
I very much enjoyed this latest book from Anna Martin. It was exceptionally well written in a style I fully appreciated. It wasn't mushy, yet aptly sentimental in parts. The story was quite original and cleverly constructed which drew me in from the start.
There are 4 main characters, although the story tends to focus heavily on James. He is 18 and just discovering his sexuality - he's not quite sure yet, but knows he is definitely not straight. He has a twin sister Frankie, who appears as the voice of calm and reason throughout crucial stages of the story.
Mark is James and Frankie's Dad. He has raised him on his own since their mother left and divorced him when they were very little. He has occasional hook ups but no serious relationship. One night he meets Steve in a bar and they hit it off, sharing an especially hot moment in the bar toilets that leads to them deciding to date.
Steve is a gay man who decided to adopt a child. That child was 14 year old Dylan; a victim of the system due to his mother being an addict and unable to take care of him. Now at age 21 he is training to be a mechanic and enjoys a great relationship with his Dad. He meets a gorgeous boy one day, who brings his old truck in to be fixed and they start going out. that boy is James. James how's Dad is Mark who is going out with Steve...complicated doesn't even begin to describe their situations.
Anna Martin has taken a complex scenario and made it into a compelling love story. Her descriptive writing took me on an emotional rollercoaster filled with highs and lows; great sex and interesting discoveries. I highly recommend this for a highly satisfying read.
